Peaks-Kenny State Park

Covering 839 acres in the Central Maine Highland, Peaks-Kenny State Park is an outdoor destination that offers, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and picnicking. Beautiful woods and the serene Sebec Lake are part of this state park as well as the “Castle,” a famous landmark built in 1890 in the image of European castles. The park first opened on July 4, 1969 and visitors enjoy learning about the history of the first settlers and the early industries of this mountainous area.
Activities
The park stretches more than one mile along the shores of Sebec Lake. Sandy Cove, a longtime favorite picnic spot, has a lifeguard, grassy picnic area with tables and barbecue grills and a children’s playground. A 56-site campground is a five minute walk from the beach. The campground features flush toilets and hot showers. Lake trout and salmon are commonly pulled from the cold waters of the lake. A public boat ramp is available and canoes are rented at the park. A short walk from the beach is a field of large glacial boulders that children enjoy climbing on.
Trails
For the hiker, Central Maine Highland, Peaks-Kenny State Park has 10 miles of easy hiking trails. Trails range from 0.7 miles to 5.5 miles round trip. Several trails are loops and hikers can enjoy wildlife watching and strolling through the hemlock and pine forests. There are short hikes to stretch the legs like the Loop Trail or higher elevation climbs to the top of Birch Mountain on the Birch Mountain Ledge Trail.
The main gate at Central Maine Highland, Peaks-Kenny State Park is open daily at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 p.m. It is open year-round but only staffed from May 15 through September 30. In the winter, visitors enjoy ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Year-round this historic park offers the best in outdoor family fun.
